WhatsApp: Messages like "earn from home" or "complete a small task and get paid" that are common on social media may seem appealing, but the truth is extremely dangerous.

Messages like "earn from home" or "complete a small task and get paid" that are common on social media may seem appealing, but the truth is extremely dangerous. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has warned that these messages are actually part of a larger scam that could completely hijack your WhatsApp.

This fraud begins with advertisements spread on social media platforms promising online earnings. Scammers contact you and tell you that you only need to complete a small digital task. They then direct you to a website or app that displays a WhatsApp Web QR code.

They ask you to scan it as if it's a registration confirmation. But as soon as you scan it, your WhatsApp is linked to an unknown device, just like you use WhatsApp Web on your laptop.

The matter doesn't end there. Once the scammer's device connects to your WhatsApp, they have complete freedom to access your chats, contacts, send messages, and misuse your account. All this happens silently, without any alert, and you don't even realize your account has been taken over. This is why this scam is called the "WhatsApp Mule Scam," because scammers use your number to commit fraud worldwide, while you pose as the real victim.

According to I4C, these mule accounts are used for international fraud. Scammers send phishing links to people in your name, demand money, or orchestrate investment scams. Because the messages are sent from your number, victims easily trust them. And when the police investigate, your number becomes a target, which can lead to legal trouble.

The best way to avoid such situations is to be vigilant. Never scan any unknown QR code, no matter how attractive the offer may seem. Always check "Linked Devices" in WhatsApp settings, and if you see any unknown devices, log out immediately.

It's also crucial to keep two-step verification turned on to keep your account more secure. Remember, genuine companies never ask you to link or rent your WhatsApp account. Putting your digital identity at risk for a few bucks can be extremely dangerous.
