The Indian government issued over 2,300 blocking orders to 19 online platforms between October 2024 and October 2025. This data is linked to the Ministry of Home Affairs 'Sahyog portal. According to an Indian Express report (REF.), information obtained through an RTI (Right to Information) request revealed that an average of six content blocking orders were issued to social media platforms every day.

The report states that platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube received the most blocking orders from the government.

What is the Sahyog portal?
The Sahyog portal was launched in October 2024. It is a single-window platform for government agencies to send blocking orders under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act.

Before this portal, agencies had to send separate emails to each platform. So far, more than 118 online platforms have been onboarded onto this portal.

The portal is used by nodal officers from states and union territories and representatives from seven central agencies. X (formerly Twitter) filed a lawsuit against the government this year, calling Sahyog a "censorship portal." The Karnataka High Court ruled in favor of the government in this case.

WhatsApp received the most orders.
According to data from the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), out of the 2,312 content blocking orders issued in a year, more than 78 percent were sent to Meta's services alone. WhatsApp received 1,392 content blocking orders, while Facebook received 255, and Instagram received 169.

YouTube received the second-highest number of orders with 176.  The government also sent 123 blocking requests to Telegram, 93 to Google, 43 to Apple, and 23 to Amazon. 38 orders were also sent to 11 other platforms, including Microsoft, LinkedIn, and Snapchat. It's worth noting that each order can contain instructions to block multiple links or accounts. Operation Sindoor: Thousands of Accounts Blocked
The highest number of accounts were blocked in May 2025 during Operation Sindoor, which took place between October 2024 and October 2025. The government believed these accounts were being operated from Pakistan and were spreading online propaganda.

At the time, X (formerly Twitter) stated that the government had ordered the blocking of over 8,000 accounts, including those of several news organizations and prominent individuals.
