Tesla-SpaceX Merger: Musk to merge Tesla and SpaceX; the resulting company will be worth 336 lakh crore..
Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, recently showcased a car capable of performing aerial maneuvers—a demonstration that hinted at the potential merger of his two major companies. The car, developed by Tesla, possesses the ability to execute stunts in mid-air, a feature derived from technology belonging to SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace company. Reports now suggest that Musk may be planning a full-scale merger of the two entities. Having already integrated technologies from Tesla and SpaceX into his products, he is now considering merging the companies themselves.
Currently, Tesla and SpaceX operate as independent entities. A special committee of independent directors from both companies is reviewing the options regarding a potential merger. While Musk has expressed a positive view of the idea, no final decision has been reached. At present, Tesla’s market valuation stands at approximately $1.5 trillion, while SpaceX is valued at around $2 trillion. A merger would create a combined entity worth $3.5 trillion. This move is not merely about creating a larger corporation; it appears to be part of a broader strategy to integrate electric vehicles, satellite internet, rocketry, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and computing infrastructure.
Five Key Reasons for the Merger:
Convergence of AI and Robotics: Musk aims to enhance technology by creating synergy between Tesla’s self-driving systems, AI software, and the ‘Optimus’ humanoid robot, and the AI models developed by SpaceX. This integration would streamline the understanding and development of data, chip designs, and software.
Data Centers in Space: AI-driven data centers require immense computing power and electricity. Musk envisions establishing solar-powered data centers in space—a feat that could be facilitated by SpaceX’s rocket technology. Global Internet: Musk’s company, Starlink, is providing internet access to remote areas through its satellite network. A merger of the companies would significantly help in expanding this connectivity.
Chip Market: Global demand for chips is rising, and Musk aims to enhance chip design and production by leveraging shared technology across his companies. By integrating AI models, computing capabilities, and hardware, the combined entity could achieve rapid growth.
Experience and Production: Tesla possesses extensive experience in large-scale manufacturing, while SpaceX brings strong engineering expertise. Together, they could elevate their operations to the next level.
Shareholders Could Block the Merger
Although Elon Musk holds a significant stake in both Tesla and SpaceX, the majority of the equity in these companies is owned by other investors. Naturally, a merger cannot proceed without their approval. Musk holds a 20% stake in Tesla and 45% in SpaceX; however, he cannot unilaterally decide on a merger, as doing so could impact the interests of other investors. For this reason, Musk has appointed a team of independent directors to evaluate the potential impact, as well as the pros and cons, of such a merger. He has stated that the approval of 50% of the external shareholders will be required for the merger to go forward.
