A shocking new revelation has emerged regarding the terrorist attack near the Red Fort in Delhi on November 10, 2025.  The mastermind of the attack, terrorist Dr. Umar Nabi, and other terrorists used ghost SIM cards and encrypted mobile apps to conceal their identities. The investigation revealed that the terrorists were using two or three phones with ghost SIMs. One of their numbers was registered with a genuine Aadhaar card for personal contact, while several other numbers were registered with fake IDs to connect with handlers across the border.

Security agencies discovered that the Aadhaar cards used to issue the ghost SIMs were also fake. Ghost SIMs are being used in everything from cyber fraud to terrorist attacks. In this report, we will tell you how ghost SIMs can be created in your name and how you can detect and deactivate them.

What is a Ghost SIM?
A ghost SIM is a SIM card or mobile connection that is not registered in a person's real name or is activated using forged/stolen documents. These are often created by misusing the details of innocent citizens' IDs, such as Aadhaar cards, or through collusion with agents. They are primarily used for cybercrime, OTP fraud, espionage, and terrorist activities so that criminals can hide their true identities.

Criminals often adopt a "dual-phone" protocol, where one clean phone is for personal use, and the other is a 'terror phone' (with a ghost SIM) used only to communicate with foreign handlers through encrypted apps like WhatsApp or Telegram. Considering this threat, the Indian government has implemented new rules under the Telecommunications Act 2023, according to which apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal will now only work if an active SIM card is present in your phone.

A Ghost SIM could be operating in your name.
Nowadays, the privacy of digital documents is crucial. If your Aadhaar card falls into the wrong hands, anyone can issue a ghost SIM in your name. Previously, detecting ghost SIMs was quite difficult, but with the help of the Sanchar Saathi portal and app from the Government of India, it has become much easier.

Check for Ghost SIMs with Sanchar Saathi
To find out if any unauthorized 'ghost SIMs' are operating under your name or ID, you can use the official 'Sanchar Saathi' portal of the Government of India. This portal reveals the phone numbers linked to your Aadhaar number.
To do this, first visit the official Sanchar Saathi website.
On the homepage, go to the Citizen Centric Services section and click on Know Your Mobile Connections.
Enter your 10-digit active mobile number and the Captcha code displayed on the screen.
An OTP will be sent to your number; enter it to log in.
Upon logging in, you will see a list of all the mobile numbers registered under your ID (such as your Aadhaar card).

What to do if you find an unknown number (Ghost SIM)?
If there is a number in the list that you do not recognize, you can take immediate action from there:
Select that number and report it by clicking on the Not My Number or Not Required option. After reporting, an ID will be generated, which you can use to check the status.
You can also use the Chakshu feature available on this portal to report suspected fraud.
According to security experts, it is also advisable to file a written complaint with the local cyber cell to prevent misuse of your identity.
To ensure your digital security, keep checking the number of SIM cards issued in your name through this portal every 3-6 months.
