Telegram: Telegram returns to Google Play Store, but the ban remains in effect until June 30..
Messaging platform Telegram has returned to the Google Play Store after a temporary ban lasting about a week. The central government had imposed a temporary ban on Telegram from June 16 to June 22 in light of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination. However, the app is not yet available on Apple's App Store; consequently, Apple users may have to wait a little longer.
Why was the ban imposed?
The National Testing Agency (NTA) had requested the central government to take action against Telegram. The agency stated that organized cheating rings were using the platform to mislead and even defraud students appearing for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination. In response, the government temporarily blocked Telegram's services as a precautionary measure.
Restriction to remain in place until June 30
Despite Telegram's return, its message-editing feature remains suspended for the time being. The central government has decided to keep this feature inactive until June 30. This move is expected to help curb the spread of fake messages and misinformation.
Delhi High Court upholds the decision.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, the Delhi High Court dismissed a petition filed by Telegram FZ LLC and upheld the central government's decision. The court observed that the government had followed the procedure prescribed under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act and that the measures taken during the emergency were reasonable and proportionate.
