Tech: What is the Passkey feature? It eliminates the need to remember passwords; this is how it works...

Passkeys are a new login mechanism that offers an alternative to traditional password systems. Developed by the FIDO Alliance and the W3C to address issues like password theft, phishing, and data breaches, they create a unique cryptographic key pair for each website or app.

Passkeys are stored on the user's device, and logins are performed using biometric authentication, such as fingerprint, Face ID, or a PIN. This cryptographic system works by synchronizing keys with the server, allowing logins without typing a password and preventing data from being shared outside the device.

Passkeys don't transfer the user's password over the internet or store it on a server. This reduces risks like phishing attacks, keylogging, and password theft. Passkeys are stored in the device's secure enclave, or keychain, making them extremely difficult to crack.

Apple has begun supporting this feature in iOS and macOS, Google in Android and Chrome, and Microsoft in Windows. Additionally, several major platforms like WhatsApp, PayPal, Amazon, and eBay have enabled passkey options, allowing users to enjoy password-free logins across all their devices.

With passkeys, users no longer need to set and remember different passwords for each website or app. Furthermore, biometric authentication makes logins faster and easier. Security is also improved, as there's no risk of passwords being shared or stolen.

To use passkeys, your device and app/website must support them. You can activate them in Settings by selecting "Create Passkey" or "Use Passkey." The next time you log in, you'll be able to access them using biometrics like fingerprint or Face ID.
