Tech Update: Switching from ChatGPT to Gemini Just Got Easier: Here's How to Use the 'Memory Import' Feature..
In the battle of AI chatbots, it is the average user who stands to benefit the most. This is because they always have the option to switch from one chatbot to another, allowing them to maximize the utility they derive from these tools. However, one major issue that persists is memory. If you interact extensively with a single chatbot, it begins to understand you better, enabling it to provide more accurate results tailored to your specific needs. To address this challenge, most AI companies are continuously introducing 'memory import prompts,' which facilitate the transfer of data from one chatbot to another. Recently, Google launched this very feature for its Gemini AI. Let's take a look at how you can easily import your ChatGPT memory into Google Gemini.
How Does the Memory Import Feature Work?
If you are having trouble grasping exactly how this feature functions, don't worry—it isn't nearly as complicated as it might seem. It is actually quite simple. On one side, you have an AI chatbot that generates an 'export prompt'; all you have to do is paste that prompt into the chatbot where you wish to import the memory.
As soon as you enter this command, the source chatbot retrieves all your previous conversations and generates a file or text document specifically for the destination chatbot—the one into which you intend to import the memory. Now, by switching over to the second chatbot, you can simply copy and paste that output. Once you do this, all your past information will be successfully imported into the new chatbot's memory.
Before Google, Anthropic's Claude had also begun offering support for this feature. Furthermore, some reports suggest that Google is currently working on a feature that would allow users to simultaneously import all their chat histories from various AI chatbots directly into Gemini. However, it remains unclear at this time exactly when this feature will become available. A Step-by-Step Guide to Importing ChatGPT Memory into Google Gemini:
Note: Currently, this feature is not available to all users; however, according to a report by Android Authority, it is available on the beta version of the Gemini app.
Nevertheless, once this feature becomes available to everyone, you will be able to utilize this functionality to import your memory from ChatGPT into Gemini. For now, if you are on the beta version and can see this feature, please follow these steps:
First, open the Google Gemini app on your phone.
Once the app opens, tap on the top-left corner, where your profile picture is displayed.
Scroll down, and directly beneath the 'Connected Apps' feature, you will see a button labeled 'Import memory to Gemini'; tap on it.
At the very top, you will see a prompt that needs to be copied. Tap the 'Copy' button to copy the prompt to your clipboard.
Now, open the ChatGPT app on your phone and paste the prompt into a new chat window.
ChatGPT will generate a detailed response for you; simply copy that response.
Now, switch back to the Gemini app; within the same 'Import memory to Gemini' section, you will find an option to paste that response.
Paste the response and tap the 'Add memory' option to update your Google Gemini's memory.
Once you have completed these steps, Google Gemini will possess all the previous details you have shared. We hope you now have a clear understanding of how to use this new feature to import your memory from ChatGPT into Gemini.
