From the days of dial-up networks to today's high-speed fiber internet connections, technology has come a long way, and so have our phones. While advanced smartphones from brands like Apple and Samsung are appealing, many people are now deliberately returning to feature phones, or "dumb phones." Their robustness, long battery life, affordable prices, and the desire for a digital detox are drawing people back to them.

People prefer smartphones because they simplify tasks like bill payments, money transfers, and more. However, feature phone users are now also able to access this feature, as even these phones support Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This means that digital payments are now possible with any phone and bank account.

What is the UPI 123Pay service?

Launched by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the UPI 123Pay service is for users who do not own a smartphone but have a bank account linked to their mobile number. This allows you to make UPI transactions even from a feature phone without internet. Let's learn how:

How to make UPI payments from a feature phone using UPI 123Pay?

Dial 08045163666 from your feature phone—this is the UPI 123Pay IVR number.
Listen to the instructions and select your language.
Follow the voice instructions to link your bank account to your mobile number (for first-time users).
Then select the transaction type—such as checking your balance, sending money, or requesting a payment.
Select the Send Money option.
Enter the receiver's mobile number, UPI ID, or bank account number, and IFSC code.
Enter the payment amount.
Enter your UPI PIN to authorize and complete the transaction.
Hang up after receiving the confirmation voice message.

To use the UPI 123Pay service, a user's mobile number must be linked to their bank account. A 4- to 6-digit UPI PIN must be created during registration, and it must be entered during every transaction. If you already have a UPI PIN, it can be used. This service does not require the internet and works like a normal call on most feature phones.

How to make UPI payments using apps and sound-based technology?

NPCI also allows users to make UPI payments using sound-based technology by simply calling an IVR number. To make a UPI payment using sound-based technology available on some soundbox devices, follow the steps below.

Select the 'Pay to Merchant' option and place your phone near the merchant's soundbox.

A unique tone will sound, then press the # key.

Enter the payment amount and enter your UPI PIN.

Wait for an audible confirmation from the soundbox.
Some feature phone manufacturers now offer built-in UPI apps, allowing you to perform various tasks like money transfers, balance checks, and bill payments. However, due to the lack of cameras on these phones, the Scan & Pay option isn't available.
