With every new device launch, older gadgets get left behind. Brands discontinue software support, apps stop working, and smart features become inactive. The GE Link smart bulb, the free version of the Wink smart home hub, and the first and second-generation Google Nest thermostats are prime examples. Google even discontinued the Nest brand and integrated it into the Google Home line, but smart bulbs are different from other devices.

While smart hubs or thermostats often become e-waste, smart bulbs can still provide light like traditional bulbs. That's why there are several smart ways to reuse them.

Use old smart bulbs as dumb bulbs.
If the smart features are gone but the bulb still lights up, simply screw it into any lamp or fixture. Many brands, like Sengled, have bulbs that continue to function as regular bulbs even after smart connectivity is discontinued. You can then use them in industrial-style pendant lights, custom DIY fixtures, or decorative lamps. Some people even repurpose old musical instruments or unique objects into light fixtures and install old smart bulbs in them.

Regain smart features with a smart plug.
If you don't want to completely give up smart features like remote control and automation, a smart plug can be an easy and affordable solution. The process is very simple. Just screw your regular bulb into a lamp, connect the lamp's plug to the smart plug, and then plug the smart plug into a power socket. The ordinary lamp then functions like a smart device. You can turn the light on and off via a mobile app.

You can then control it with voice commands using Alexa or another voice assistant, and even set schedules or scenes based on the time of day. If you choose a smart plug with Z-Wave, Zigbee, or Matter support, you won't be dependent on a single brand, and it will be easier to add other smart devices in the future. This way, you can experience smart lighting in your home again without even changing the bulbs.

Old Smart Bulbs Can Become Creative Decor
Smart bulbs have a stronger outer casing than regular bulbs, making them great for DIY projects. Even if the bulb is broken, it can still be used. You can use it as a small planter or terrarium, a Christmas tree ornament, a mini vase, a coin bank, an oil lamp, or a candle holder. Many shopping apps even sell craft bulbs separately for this very reason.
