Google has introduced a new update for Gmail's Gemini-powered 'Help Me Write' feature, offering users greater control over AI-generated email drafts. This latest change allows users to refine existing drafts using their own text instructions, rather than relying solely on preset editing options. The update also adds 'Undo' and 'Redo' controls for AI editing, making it easier to revise messages before sending them. Google states that the feature is currently rolling out and is expected to reach eligible users by July 20.

**Custom Refinement Tools for Gmail's Gemini-Powered 'Help Me Write'**

According to a Google blog post, Gmail's 'Help Me Write' feature now allows users to specify how they want an email draft edited via a prompt bar. Once Gemini generates a draft, users can submit a follow-up prompt describing the desired changes, and Gmail will revise the message accordingly. The AI then updates the draft based on those instructions.

This new capability expands upon previous refinement tools, which were limited to preset options like 'Polish,' 'Formalise,' and 'Shorten.' With this latest update, users can request more specific changes, such as adding missing information to a particular section of the email or including a deadline in the message. Gmail now also supports 'Undo' and 'Redo' actions for AI-generated edits while refining drafts.

The company stated that this feature is enabled by default for eligible users. For Google Workspace customers, administrators must enable access to 'Gemini for Workspace' and 'Workspace Intelligence' in Gmail. Once available, end users will not need to manually turn on the feature. Google has begun rolling out updates to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, with wider availability expected by July 20. This feature is available to Business Starter, Standard, and; Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus; Frontline Plus; Google AI Pro for Education; and AI Expanded Access customers, as well as Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers.

"Help Me Write" is essentially Google's Gemini-powered writing assistant built directly into Gmail. It can generate full email drafts from brief prompts and refine existing messages. Prior to this update, users could adjust drafts using preset options to modify the email's tone, length, or clarity. This latest update expands those capabilities by allowing custom editing instructions, giving users more precise control over how Gemini revises their messages.
