Starlink: When will Elon Musk's satellite internet be available? Here's the reason for the delay..
Indians have been waiting for satellite internet services for a long time, and there has been much discussion about Elon Musk's Starlink launching its services in India. This is why everyone wants to know when Elon Musk will finally launch Starlink services in India. Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently provided information on why there is a delay in the launch of Satcom services in India.
What is the reason for the delay in the Satcom rollout?
Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that satellite communication services in India will only begin when operators meet security requirements and the spectrum pricing is finalized. Until both of these tasks are completed, satellite internet services cannot be given the green light. Therefore, it is still unclear when Elon Musk's company will be able to launch its satellite internet service.
Scindia informed that companies like Elon Musk's Starlink, Eutelsat One, and Jio Satellite Global Services (SGS) will receive spectrum only after the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) completes the pricing process and the companies comply with security regulations. These are the two issues that need to be addressed.
These companies will have to comply with security clearances regarding international gateways and ensure that data remains within India. The government has allocated temporary spectrum to the Satcom companies so that they can comply with the regulations in coordination with security agencies. Regarding spectrum pricing, he stated that this matter is being handled by the DoT and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
TRAI Rejects DoT Proposals
In early December, TRAI rejected several proposals from the DoT, including levying a 5 percent annual spectrum fee instead of 4 percent and removing the Rs 500 per connection charge in urban areas. It is expected that the DoT will present its views before the Digital Communications Commission (DCC), the highest decision-making body in the telecom sector, which will then determine the further course of action.
