Spotify Introduces Page Match: Scan a Book Page to Instantly Sync with Its Audiobook

Spotify is expanding its footprint in the book ecosystem with a major new feature designed to bridge the gap between physical books and audiobooks. The music and podcast giant has announced a new tool called Page Match, which allows readers to sync their paperback or e-book with its audiobook version simply by using their phone’s camera.

Alongside this, Spotify has also partnered with Bookshop.org, enabling users to purchase physical books directly from within the Spotify app—while supporting independent bookstores in the process. Together, these updates signal Spotify’s most serious move yet into the world of reading.

Buy Physical Books Directly from Spotify

Starting this spring, Spotify users in the United States and the United Kingdom will notice a new option on audiobook listings labeled “Get a copy for your bookshelf.” Tapping this button redirects users to Bookshop.org’s checkout page, where they can buy a physical edition of the same book.

Spotify handles discovery and recommendations, while Bookshop.org manages sales and fulfillment. A portion of every purchase supports local, independent bookstores, helping them compete in an increasingly digital-first market.

Bookshop.org founder Andy Hunter welcomed the collaboration, stating that any initiative that encourages more people to read ultimately benefits the entire publishing ecosystem.

What Is Spotify Page Match?

The headline feature, however, is Page Match, which is set to roll out on iOS and Android by the end of February. This tool is designed for readers who switch between reading and listening throughout the day.

Using your phone’s camera, Page Match scans a page from your physical book or e-reader. Spotify then automatically jumps to the exact corresponding moment in the audiobook. The process works in reverse as well—if you’re listening to an audiobook, you can scan a page to instantly find where to continue reading in print.

How Page Match Works

Page Match relies on optical character recognition (OCR) technology to analyze text and match it accurately across formats. Once a page is scanned, Spotify compares the text with its audiobook database and aligns playback precisely with the scanned content.

At launch, Page Match supports most English-language titles available in Spotify’s audiobook catalog, which currently includes over 500,000 audiobooks. The feature is especially useful for commuters, gym-goers, or multitaskers who move between formats depending on their routine.

Spotify’s Strategy: Complement, Not Replace, Print

Despite Spotify’s rapid growth in audiobooks, the company acknowledges that physical books still dominate the market, accounting for nearly 73 percent of trade publishing revenue. Rather than positioning audiobooks as a replacement, Spotify is framing its platform as a companion to print reading.

According to Owen Smith, Spotify’s Global Head of Audiobooks, the goal is to make reading more flexible and seamlessly integrated into daily life. Page Match builds on Spotify’s earlier Audiobook Recap feature, which launched in beta on iOS last year and is set to expand to Android this spring.

Why Page Match Matters

  • Makes switching between reading and listening effortless

  • Encourages use of both physical books and audiobooks

  • Supports independent bookstores through Bookshop.org

  • Enhances long-form reading habits in busy lifestyles

Final Thoughts

With Page Match and direct physical book purchasing, Spotify is redefining how people interact with books. Instead of choosing between print or audio, users can now enjoy both—without losing their place. This hybrid approach reflects changing reading habits and positions Spotify as a more holistic platform for storytelling.
