First State in the Country
Karnataka has become the first state in the country to ban social media use for children. However, stakeholders are being consulted regarding the ban on social media use for children in Goa, Maharashtra, and Bihar. The government has formed a task force to ban social media for children in these states.
Last month, while speaking with the Vice Chancellor of the State Higher Education Council, the Chief Minister of Karnataka discussed age-based restrictions on social media use, citing the example of Australia. During this period, the government decided to study international models for social media bans.
AI Innovation Zone to be Established in Bengaluru
During his budget speech, the Karnataka Chief Minister announced that a robotics and AI campus, called the Bengaluru Robotics and AI Innovation Zone, would be established under IISc in collaboration with ISRO and Keonics. He stated that this strict decision was taken in light of the negative effects of social media on children under the age of 16 and the increasing use of mobile phones.
The Central Government is Also Making Preparations
