UK Social Media Ban for Children: Preparations to restrict social media access for children under 16 in the United Kingdom (UK) are nearing completion. The government is set to announce a ban on social media for young children soon. Reports indicate that, much like in Australia, children under 16 in the UK will be unable to access platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, X, Threads, Snapchat, Twitch, and Kick. Notably, many countries are moving towards imposing social media restrictions due to concerns regarding the impact on children's mental health.

Crackdown on Gaming Apps Too

The UK is not only banning social media apps for children but is also preparing to tighten regulations on gaming apps. While gaming apps themselves will not be banned, they will be required to remove features that allow children to chat with strangers. Similarly, access to romantic and sexual chatbots will be restricted for users under the age of 18. The government intends to utilise existing laws for this purpose and may enact new legislation if necessary. An age verification system for child safety online is already in place, but regulations regarding social media are now being further strengthened.

Australia Led the Way

Australia was the first to take the initiative by banning social media for children under 16. Following this, several other countries began considering similar measures. Starting next year, children under 15 in Greece will be unable to access social media. Meanwhile, France, Denmark, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Spain are also preparing to enact similar laws. Canada is considering restrictions on AI chatbots for children, alongside measures targeting social media. There is growing global concern that social media is adversely affecting children's mental health, leading to issues such as depression.

Experts Divided on the Ban

While governments worldwide are actively targeting social media, expert opinion remains divided. Many experts argue that such bans are not entirely effective, as people can still access social media platforms using methods like VPNs. Furthermore, there is no evidence to suggest that banning social media improves children's mental health; in fact, many experts fear it could lead to social isolation among children.
