SIR Form Scam: This cunning trick of fraudsters will empty your account and leave you flat on your back...
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is running a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign to verify and update voter IDs. Cybercriminals are now taking advantage of this and preying on people under the guise of the SIR form. Several cases have been reported where attempts have been made to defraud people in the name of updating the voter list. Recently, the Madhya Pradesh government's Home Department issued an advisory from the X account, advising people to be wary of scams using the SIR form.
SIR Kya Hai: What is SIR?
This is the Election Commission of India's (ECI) door-to-door voter list verification process. According to the ECI, the purpose of this campaign is to create a completely accurate voter list, containing the correct name of every eligible voter, and free of any duplicate, fake, or ineligible names.
SIR Scam: How is the scam operating?
Cyber fraudsters are sending fake links and APK files to people using the name of SIR. Scammers call, claiming to be election officials, and saying, "Your name may be removed from the voter list. Fill out this form immediately." They ask for an OTP to empty your bank account or steal data from your phone.
So, no matter what, you should never share your OTP with anyone you don't know. Always remember that a Booth Level Officer (BLO) or any other government official never asks for your OTP. If you make the mistake of sharing an OTP, your account could be emptied.
What information do scammers ask for using the name of SIR?
The scammers' goal is to steal your banking data, so they ask for sensitive information using the name of SIR, such as your full name, address, Aadhaar details, OTP received on your mobile number, and bank details. To avoid being scammed, don't share any of these details with anyone.
How to tell if a message is fake or real?
If you receive a message asking you to click on a link or download something through a link, be alert and understand that this is a ploy by fraudsters to trap you.
