People often assume that a red or glowing indicator light on the webcam means their laptop or computer camera is recording their every move. However, this isn't always the case. Often, the light simply signals that the camera is active, though it can also appear during actual recording.

Why does the red light appear on the webcam?

Most laptops and external webcams feature a small LED light near the camera lens. This light turns on whenever an app or software utilizes the camera, serving to inform the user that the camera is currently active.

Furthermore, it is important to note that an active camera does not always indicate video recording. Sometimes, the camera remains on simply to display live video or for facial recognition purposes.

When to be cautious

If the webcam light turns on repeatedly even when you haven't opened any camera-enabled apps, it could be a cause for concern. In such a scenario, a background app might be accessing the camera, or malware could be present. First, check which app is using the camera. On both Windows and macOS, you can view which apps have camera permissions by checking the Privacy Settings.
