UPI has made payments incredibly easy, but its growing usage has also given rise to new methods of fraud. Scammers are now using fake UPI apps—designed to look exactly like genuine ones—to convince people that a payment has been made. These apps can display "payment successful" messages and even play the corresponding notification sound, yet the money never actually reaches the bank account. Relying solely on the screen display or sound notification can prove costly.

**Fake UPI Apps Mimic Genuine Ones**
Fraudulent UPI apps can look identical to legitimate ones. Scammers may use apps that imitate popular platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. After a transaction is initiated, the screen displays a success message, and an audio notification plays. Links to such fake apps have also been found circulating on Telegram. Small shopkeepers, traders, and laborers are often targeted through these fake payment methods.

**Payment Visible on Screen, but Money Not Credited**
Fraudsters may scan a shop's or an individual's QR code and then display a fake payment confirmation screen. Hearing the "payment successful" sound and seeing the message on the phone leads the recipient to believe the money has been received, even though the funds never actually reach their bank account. Therefore, a payment screenshot or sound notification should not be considered definitive proof. After a payment is made, verify the funds by checking your UPI app's balance history or bank statement. If the transaction does not appear, do not rush to hand over goods or provide services.

**Points to Remember When Using UPI**
Never share your UPI PIN with anyone. The UPI PIN is used for sending money, not for receiving it; avoid entering your PIN when receiving funds, and always verify the receiver's name and UPI ID before making a payment. Download UPI apps only from official platforms like the Google Play Store or the App Store. Do not download apps based on suspicious links or the lure of excessive cashback offers. Avoid making payments over public or unsecured Wi-Fi networks, and ensure your phone and UPI apps are protected by a lock or biometric security.

Report any transaction irregularities immediately.
It is essential to regularly check your UPI transaction history. If you notice any unknown or suspicious payments, inform your bank immediately. In the event of falling victim to cyber fraud, you can call 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. While UPI payments are convenient, it is crucial to personally verify every payment to avoid falling prey to fake apps or fraudulent transactions. Taking simple precautions can help prevent losses resulting from such fraud.
