SBI Data Leak News: Ever since reports emerged regarding an SBI data leak on the dark web, customers have been deeply concerned about the safety of their funds deposited with the bank—fearing that their money might be lost. However, the State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest bank, has issued a statement to reassure its customers. In a post on the social media platform 'X' on Friday, the bank clarified that this cyberattack has not compromised any customer accounts or funds. The bank has assured all its customers that their money remains completely safe.
Alert Sent to Customers
SBI stated that it took immediate action following this cyber incident on the dark web. The 3,897 customers whose data was leaked have been alerted via individual messages sent through email and WhatsApp. If you have not received such a message, it means your data is entirely secure.
How Was the Data Leak Discovered?
Earlier this week, the bank received an alert regarding a data leak from its threat intelligence service provider, the Defence Cyber Agency, and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). Upon investigating approximately 375,000 records found on the dark web, it was discovered that the personal details of 3,897 SBI customers were included.
What Information Was Leaked on the Dark Web?
According to the bank, the leaked information includes customers' registered mobile numbers, names, gender, dates of birth, email IDs, and home addresses. Additionally, the data contained branch names, CIF numbers, lead IDs, and certain files related to loans. However, the bank has reiterated that no customer's banking passwords or funds have been compromised.
Investigation Underway, Security Protocols Activated
Upon learning of the data leak, SBI immediately activated its cyber incident response and security protocols. An independent cybersecurity agency, affiliated with CERT-In, has been engaged to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. This agency is working to determine the source of the data leak and identify those responsible.
Bank Issues Important Advice to Customers
SBI has urged all its customers to exercise caution while engaging in digital banking. The bank has advised customers never to share their OTP, UPI PIN, or net banking password with anyone. Furthermore, customers are advised to remain vigilant and not to trust any unsolicited phone calls, messages, or emails.
