WhatsApp has finally released the feature for its iPad app that users have been waiting for for years. Until now, using WhatsApp on an iPad required linking it to your mobile phone via 'Companion Mode.' However, with the new update, you can register your WhatsApp account directly on your iPad without needing a phone. This means your iPad will now become your primary device.

**How will the primary setup work on the iPad?**
According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is gradually rolling out this new feature with the latest iPadOS update (version 26.25.74). Setting up your iPad as the primary device is just like setting up WhatsApp on your phone. After opening the app, you need to enter your country code and mobile number. You will then receive a 6-digit verification code; entering it activates your account. If you have already set up a Passkey, you can log in quickly using biometrics instead of the code.

**What changes once it becomes the primary device?**
Once your iPad is set as the primary device, all the restrictions associated with Companion Mode will be lifted. You will be able to send your live location directly from the iPad. Your broadcast lists will function fully, and most importantly, there will be no risk of being logged out of WhatsApp on the iPad even if your phone remains inactive for 14 days.

**The old Companion Mode will also remain available**
WhatsApp is not discontinuing the old 'Companion Mode' with this update. Users who prefer to keep their mobile phone as the main device and use the iPad merely as a supporting screen can continue to do so. When you install the app on your iPad for the first time, you will have the freedom to choose between these two options.
