Water purifiers have become a necessity in every household these days, but we often forget about them after installing them. According to experts, bacteria can grow in the internal pipes and plastic body of an old or expired purifier over time. If you notice these changes in your machine, take immediate action:

1. Change in taste and strange odor
If the water smells muddy or tastes bitter as soon as you fill a glass, it's likely that the carbon filter and membrane are damaged. These damaged filters stop absorbing chlorine and impurities, making the water unsuitable for drinking.

2. Reduced water flow rate
Is it taking longer to fill a bottle of water than before? If so, this could be a sign that your RO filter is completely clogged. Dirt in the water accumulates in the membrane, reducing pressure. If there's no improvement after servicing, it's best to replace the machine.

3. Uncontrolled TDS Levels
For a healthy body, the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) of water should be between 50 and 150. Therefore, check it with a digital meter. If the TDS level remains high even after changing the filter, it means that the system's internal machinery has failed.

4. Water Color and Floating Particles
Pure water should be as transparent as glass. If the water appears slightly yellow, cloudy, or has floating particles, it can cause stomach upset. This means that the filters are no longer capable of filtering water at a finer level.

How often should you replace your water purifier?
The average lifespan of a good water purifier is 5 to 10 years. If you're calling a mechanic every other month and the repair bill is reaching the EMI of a new RO, then it's time to replace your old machine.

Don't compromise your health.
Experts say that older purifiers can develop a sticky layer (biofilm) over time on their internal pipes, which is difficult to clean. Therefore, a timely upgrade not only saves you money but also protects your family's health.
