The social media platform Orkut might make a comeback. On October 9, the company's founder, Orkut Buyukkokten, announced plans to relaunch the platform. His goal this time is to create a space where people can form genuine friendships, build communities, and connect with one another.

Buyukkokten has also posted a letter on the company's website.
In the letter, he explains his reasons for wanting to relaunch the social media platform. He notes that over the past 20 years, the focus of social media has shifted from connecting people to maximizing their attention. However, he has not yet announced a specific launch date for Orkut's return.
Letter shared on the Orkut website

Orkut founder Orkut Buyukkokten states that he wants to relaunch the platform to foster genuine friendships and meaningful relationships among people online. He believes that in the early days of the internet, connecting with strangers, making new friends, and interacting with like-minded people was a special experience. However, the nature of social media has changed over the last two decades. Platforms now prioritize metrics—such as how long users spend on their phones, how many posts they view, and the number of likes or comments they generate—rather than focusing on connecting people. This shift has created distance between individuals and contributed to the growing problem of loneliness.

Buyukkokten points out that the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has led to an increase in fake accounts, deepfakes, and machine-generated content on social media. This makes it difficult to determine whether there is a real person on the other end of an interaction. He believes that no matter how advanced technology becomes, it cannot replace human happiness, love, hope, and friendship. He envisions a social media platform where people can form communities based on their interests, help one another, and connect with trust. For him, the true purpose of social media should be to connect people, rather than simply consuming as much of their time as possible.

That is why he has appealed to people to join the campaign for Orkut's comeback. He has asked them to visit orkut.com to register and invite a friend to join the initiative. He wants people to tell their friends why they are special to them. His message is clear: the internet should once again become a place where human beings and their relationships are prioritized. However, he has not yet announced when Orkut will relaunch.

What benefits might users gain from Orkut's return?
If Orkut relaunches, users could have the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and form new communities with like-minded people. Users would be able to connect based on their interests and share ideas with others who share similar hobbies. However, these are potential benefits; the platform's new features and capabilities have not yet been officially announced. It remains unclear what plans Orkut will implement regarding data privacy, security, and dealing with fake content.
