Received an RTO challan message on WhatsApp? Don't click it; cyber fraudsters have set a huge trap.
Cyber Fraud: If you've recently received a message on WhatsApp asking you to pay an RTO challan, be careful! Clicking on it, thinking it's genuine, could be a huge risk.
If you've recently received a message on WhatsApp asking you to pay an RTO challan, be careful! Clicking on it, thinking it's genuine, could be a huge risk. In fact, this isn't a genuine challan, but a fraudulent trap created by cyber fraudsters. This message sends a link or file that appears normal, but upon clicking, it installs dangerous malware on your phone. This could allow hackers to take complete control of your phone.
According to a Times of India report, police officials have warned that a file named RTO Traffic Challan.apk is spreading rapidly on WhatsApp. Once downloaded, it infects your phone and gives hackers access to your personal information, bank details, passwords, and OTPs.
Cybersecurity agency Cyble Rail has described it as a highly dangerous virus that can monitor every activity on your phone through remote access. Several cases have been reported in recent times where people's accounts have been emptied.
The fraudsters first send this file from an unknown number, posing as an RTO challan. The user, assuming it's genuine, downloads it, and this proves to be the biggest mistake. Once the app is installed, hackers gain access to your mobile's SMS, contacts, files, camera, and microphone. They then secretly monitor your digital activities and, at the opportune moment, siphon money from your bank account.
The easiest way to avoid this is to never click on any unknown link or APK file. If you truly need to check your challan, use only government websites like Parivahan.gov.in or your state's RTO website. Always turn off the "Unknown Sources" option in your phone's settings to prevent apps from being installed without your permission.
It's no longer safe to trust every message you receive on WhatsApp. Scammers are constantly trying new methods to scam people. So be cautious and think twice before opening any suspicious links, as one click could put your entire digital world at risk.
