DAMINI App: Every year, hundreds of people lose their lives after being struck by lightning. Farmers working in fields and individuals traveling in open spaces are particularly at the highest risk. But did you know that technology can now save your life from lightning strikes? The India Meteorological Department (IMD)—under the Government of India—and IITM Pune have developed an app that provides alerts on your phone 40 minutes *before* a lightning strike occurs. Let's explore how this app works and how it can assist people...

The DAMINI App
To help keep people safe from lightning strikes, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has launched a specialized mobile application. This app is named DAMINI. It has been developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). The DAMINI app monitors lightning activity across India; utilizing GPS technology, it alerts you 40 minutes in advance if there is a probability of a lightning strike occurring within a 20 to 40-kilometer radius of your current location. With the help of this app, you can move to a safe shelter in good time.

How to Use the App
Using this app is extremely simple. To get started, you simply need to install the DAMINI app from the Play Store or App Store and complete the registration process. Once set up, you will receive an instant alert on your phone whenever there is a possibility of a lightning strike in your vicinity. Additionally, the app's map feature allows you to access real-time updates on lightning activity across the entire country. Simply click on the map and zoom in. On the map, indications of lightning strikes are displayed in two distinct colors: the yellow color provides information regarding a potential strike within the next 10 minutes, while the blue color serves as an alert for a potential strike within the next 10 minutes.
