Cyber Fraud: If you scan QR codes for everyday purchases or small payments, this news could be a wake-up call.

If you scan QR codes for everyday purchases or small payments, this news could be a wake-up call. With the increasing trend of digital payments in the country, fraudsters have found a new way to cheat people. Now, scammers are directly attacking people's bank accounts through QR codes, and in many cases, accounts are being emptied in just a few moments.

In fact, recent reports indicate that a network of fake QR codes is being spread in many cities and towns. Fraudsters are quietly replacing genuine QR code stickers in public places with their fake ones. Parking areas, tea stalls, paan shops, and other places where people make quick, small payments have become the scammers' favorite targets. As soon as someone scans the QR code without paying attention, the money goes directly into the fraudster's account.

To understand this scam, it's important to know how QR codes work. Generally, there are two types of QR codes. One type allows the user to enter the amount themselves after scanning. The other type is created for a pre-determined amount, with no option to change the amount. Scammers are misusing this second type of QR code. They place codes that, when scanned, display a large, fixed amount on the screen, and people, in their haste, enter their PIN.

The problem doesn't end there. In many places, fake QR codes are leading people to fake payment apps or websites that look like the real ones. As soon as someone enters their UPI PIN or OTP, money is deducted from their account. In some cases, malware or viruses are also being delivered to mobile phones through QR codes, allowing scammers to gain control of the phone remotely.

After this, not only bank accounts but also personal information and photos on the phone are at risk. Therefore, caution is extremely important when making payments using QR codes. Never make payments in a hurry, and always ensure that you are the one entering the amount. If a page asking for your PIN opens immediately after scanning the QR code, or if you feel pressured to approve the payment, stop the process immediately.

Also, be sure to check the message you receive from your bank after the payment. Furthermore, if the QR code attempts to redirect you to another suspicious page or app, close it immediately. A little vigilance can save you from significant losses.
