QR Code Scams on the Rise: How Cybercriminals Are Tricking UPI Users and How You Can Stay Safe

Digital payments through UPI (Unified Payments Interface) have transformed the way India handles everyday transactions. From grocery shopping to utility bill payments, millions of users rely on apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm for quick and seamless transfers. However, this growing dependence on digital payments has also opened new doors for cybercriminals. A rising number of fraud cases now reveal that scanning the wrong QR code or approving a fake payment request can instantly drain bank accounts.

Recognizing the growing threat, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), through its official awareness platform CyberDost, has recently issued a public warning. The advisory highlights common UPI fraud techniques and urges users to verify critical details before completing any transaction.

How UPI Fraud Actually Happens

Cybercriminals use multiple tactics to exploit user trust and technical gaps. Most scams succeed due to urgency, misinformation, or lack of awareness. One of the most common methods is phishing, where fraudsters impersonate bank officials or customer support executives. Victims receive fake calls, SMS messages, or emails warning them that their account will be blocked unless they share their UPI PIN or OTP. Once shared, the scammer gains instant access to funds.

Another fast-growing method is the fake QR code scam. Fraudsters circulate QR codes through messaging apps, social media, or even paste them at physical locations. Users are told that scanning the code will help them receive money, but in reality, the scan initiates a payment request that debits funds from the user’s account.

Remote Access and Fake App Scams

One of the most dangerous forms of UPI fraud involves remote access scams. In such cases, scammers convince victims to install screen-sharing or remote access applications under the pretext of technical assistance. Once installed, criminals gain complete control of the phone, monitor keystrokes, and execute transactions without the victim’s consent.

Another alarming trend is the circulation of fake UPI apps. These counterfeit applications closely resemble genuine payment apps. Once installed, they silently steal personal data, banking details, and login credentials, leading to unauthorized transactions and identity theft.

Fake Payment Requests and Refund Traps

Fraudsters also send fake payment requests claiming they are issuing refunds, prize money, or cashback. Many users mistakenly believe approving a request will credit money to their account. In reality, approval authorizes a debit, resulting in immediate financial loss.

Cyber experts warn that no legitimate bank or payment service sends unsolicited payment requests. Any unexpected request should be treated with extreme caution.

Simple Steps to Protect Yourself from UPI Scams

Staying safe requires awareness and basic digital hygiene. Experts recommend the following precautions:

  • Use only official UPI apps downloaded from trusted app stores

  • Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, or CVV, even with someone claiming to be from the bank

  • Avoid scanning QR codes sent by unknown contacts

  • Set daily transaction limits within your UPI app

  • Keep your phone locked with strong passwords or biometric security

  • Update apps and operating systems regularly

Remember, banks and payment providers never ask for confidential information over calls or messages.

What to Do If You Become a Victim of UPI Fraud

If you suspect fraud, act immediately. Time plays a critical role in recovery:

  1. Contact your bank or payment app support and block your account

  2. Report the incident through the UPI app’s help section

  3. Call the national cybercrime helpline 1930

  4. File a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

  5. Register an FIR at your nearest police station if required

Early reporting significantly increases the chances of recovering lost funds.

Final Word

UPI has made financial transactions faster and more convenient, but convenience should never come at the cost of safety. Cybercriminals continuously evolve their methods, targeting unsuspecting users through QR codes, fake apps, and payment traps. Staying alert, verifying every transaction, and following basic safety rules can protect you from major financial losses.

In digital payments, one wrong click can be costly—but one smart check can save you thousands.
