Prime Video and Amazon MX Player to Merge Into India’s Biggest Streaming Hub
In a major move that could reshape India’s digital entertainment industry, Amazon Prime Video has announced that it will integrate Amazon MX Player into its platform. The company says the merger will create India’s largest destination for original and exclusive streaming content, bringing both free and paid entertainment under one ecosystem.
The integration comes after Amazon acquired select assets of MX Player in 2024. Those assets were later combined with Amazon miniTV to form Amazon MX Player. Now, the company is preparing to unify the services further to offer viewers a seamless streaming experience across devices and subscription models.
Combined Streaming Service to Launch Soon
According to Amazon, the integrated streaming experience will roll out over the coming months. Once completed, users will be able to access a massive library of premium and ad-supported content from a single destination.
The company said the move will combine multiple streaming models into one platform, including Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD), Advertising Video on Demand (AVOD), Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD), and add-on channel subscriptions.
This means viewers will no longer need to switch between different apps or services to watch free shows, premium originals, rented movies, or subscription-based content.
Amazon described the new platform as a one-stop entertainment hub designed to cater to both paying subscribers and free users.
What the Integration Means for Users
The merger is aimed at creating a more unified and flexible viewing experience for Indian audiences.
Prime members will gain access to a broader range of original series, exclusive shows, international content, and ad-supported programming across multiple devices. Users will also reportedly have the option to watch content with or without advertisements, depending on their subscription preferences.
At the same time, free users will continue to enjoy access to AVOD content through Amazon MX Player. The company also plans to make it easier for these viewers to upgrade to Prime subscriptions if they want additional premium content and features.
This hybrid strategy reflects Amazon’s effort to target India’s highly diverse streaming audience, where both subscription-based and free content consumption continue to grow rapidly.
Amazon Says Platform Will Strengthen Its Entertainment Business
Gaurav Gandhi, Vice President for Prime Video Asia-Pacific and ANZ, said the integration would significantly strengthen Amazon’s entertainment offerings in India.
According to Gandhi, Prime Video has always focused on delivering authentic stories that reflect the diversity of Indian audiences. By adding Amazon MX Player’s large original content library and viewer base, the combined platform is expected to become stronger and more expansive than ever before.
He added that the partnership would help bring together premium global entertainment and locally produced originals in a single streaming destination.
The company believes this approach will help it compete more aggressively in India’s fast-growing and highly competitive OTT market.
Big Opportunity for Advertisers
Amazon is also positioning the merger as a major opportunity for advertisers.
Girish Prabhu, Vice President and Head of Amazon Ads India, described the integration as a “game changer” for brands and marketers.
He explained that the unified platform will allow advertisers to reach both free and premium viewers through a single ecosystem. This could enable large-scale “full-funnel advertising,” helping brands engage users at multiple stages of the consumer journey.
Industry analysts believe the combination of Prime Video’s premium audience and Amazon MX Player’s massive free-user base could create one of the largest advertising-supported streaming ecosystems in India.
How the Transition Will Work
Amazon has already outlined its transition strategy for different platforms and devices.
On Android devices, the Amazon MX Player app will continue operating as a free AVOD platform. However, the app will feature Prime Video branding and offer users easy access to Prime subscriptions.
For iOS devices, smart TVs, and web users, Amazon MX Player viewers will be redirected to Prime Video, where both free and premium content libraries will be available together.
Amazon stated that the strong Android user base remains a crucial part of its long-term AVOD growth strategy and future subscription expansion plans.
Massive Content Library Expected
Currently, Prime Video offers a mix of international blockbusters, Indian originals, movies, and premium TV shows. Meanwhile, Amazon MX Player has built a large audience through original web series, dubbed international content, micro dramas, and reality programming.
By combining both services, Amazon aims to create one of the most diverse content collections in the country.
The company says the integrated platform will enhance content variety while strengthening its position in India’s increasingly competitive streaming market, where platforms are aggressively competing for subscribers, advertisers, and viewer engagement.
India’s OTT Competition Set to Intensify
India’s OTT industry has witnessed rapid growth over the past few years, driven by affordable internet access, smartphone adoption, and rising demand for digital entertainment.
With this integration, Amazon appears to be preparing for a stronger battle against rival streaming giants that are also investing heavily in original programming and hybrid monetization models.
The merger of Prime Video and Amazon MX Player could potentially change how Indian viewers consume entertainment by offering free and premium content together within a single streaming ecosystem.
