Preparations Underway to Curb Piracy: Telegram Asked to Remove Illegal Content..
The Central Government has taken a significant step regarding piracy. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a notice to the messaging platform Telegram under the Information Technology Act, 2000. The Ministry has directed Telegram to remove pirated—that is, illegally shared—content from its platform.
This action by the government follows complaints received from several OTT platforms. The complainants include JioCinema, Amazon Prime Video, and other digital streaming platforms. These companies have alleged that illegal copies of their films and web series are being shared on a massive scale on Telegram.
Thousands of Channels Uncovered During Investigation
During the investigation into the matter, the government discovered that a large number of channels are active on Telegram, providing pirated copies of films and OTT content. Based on the investigation, a total of 3,142 Telegram channels were identified as illegally sharing copyrighted content.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has directed Telegram to take immediate action against these channels and to remove the pirated content from its platform. The Ministry has made it clear that strict measures will be taken against platforms and channels that violate copyright laws.
Financial Losses for OTT Companies
OTT companies state that they are incurring heavy financial losses due to piracy. Often, within just a few hours of a new film or web series being released, pirated copies become available on platforms like Telegram. This adversely impacts the business operations of subscription-based platforms. Experts believe that the rapidly rising piracy on digital platforms is becoming a major challenge for the entertainment industry.
Government's Strict Stance Continues
The government has previously taken several steps to curb online piracy. The Ministry asserts that platforms violating copyright laws are being monitored, and further strict action will be taken whenever necessary. This action by the government is being viewed as a source of relief for the entertainment industry, as it is expected to curb the illegal sharing of films and web series.
