PhonePe Launches Biometric UPI Payments: Pay Without PIN Using Fingerprint or Face ID

Digital payments in India are set to become faster and more secure as PhonePe introduces a new biometric authentication feature. With this update, users can now approve UPI transactions using fingerprint or facial recognition instead of entering a PIN, simplifying the payment process while adding an extra layer of security.

The feature has currently been rolled out for Android users and is expected to be available on iOS devices soon.

What the New Feature Offers

The biometric payment option allows users to authorize transactions using the same fingerprint or face unlock system already set up on their smartphones. This means they no longer need to manually enter their UPI PIN for every payment.

However, the facility is currently limited to transactions of up to ₹5,000. Payments exceeding this amount will still require the traditional PIN verification method. This ensures that higher-value transfers continue to maintain stricter authentication safeguards.

Why This Matters for Users

Security and convenience are the two biggest advantages of the new feature. Entering a PIN in crowded public places can expose users to “shoulder surfing,” where someone nearby might see the code. Biometric authentication significantly reduces this risk because sensitive information is no longer typed manually.

It also helps users who frequently forget their PIN or enter it incorrectly, a common reason for transaction failures. With biometrics, payments can be completed quickly with a simple touch or glance, improving overall user experience.

How to Activate Biometric Payments on PhonePe

Users can enable the feature in a few simple steps:

  1. Open the PhonePe app.

  2. Go to the profile section.

  3. Tap Manage Payments.

  4. Select Biometric Pay.

  5. Turn on biometric authentication for the desired bank account.

  6. Confirm once using UPI PIN and biometric verification to finish setup.

If biometric authentication fails due to poor lighting or sensor issues, users can instantly switch back to the PIN option to complete the payment.

Where the Feature Can Be Used

The biometric payment system works across most everyday UPI activities, including:

  • Peer-to-peer transfers

  • QR code payments at shops

  • Online purchases

  • Checking bank balance

This makes it suitable for both routine micro-payments and quick transactions during travel, shopping, or dining.

Company’s Vision for Digital Payments

According to company leadership, the goal behind launching biometric authentication is to make digital transactions more seamless and secure for millions of users. By integrating device-level security with payment authorization, the platform aims to reduce friction while maintaining strong protection standards.

Industry observers note that such innovations could accelerate adoption of digital payments, especially among users who prioritize convenience but remain cautious about security risks.

The Bigger Picture

India’s digital payment ecosystem continues to evolve rapidly, with fintech companies constantly introducing features designed to enhance safety and ease of use. Biometric authentication represents another step toward frictionless payments, where transactions can be completed instantly without compromising security.

As adoption grows, similar authentication methods may become standard across multiple payment platforms, signaling a broader shift toward password-free financial transactions.
