With Paytm’s new feature, users can now move beyond default UPI handles and design their own payment identity. It’s secure, simple, and smart—a small change that could make a big difference in how India transacts digitally.

Paytm Users Can Now Create Their Own UPI ID — Here’s How to Set Yours Up Easily

In a move to make digital transactions more personalized and secure, Paytm has introduced a brand-new feature that allows users to create their own customized UPI ID. Until now, users had to rely on default UPI IDs assigned by banks or the Paytm system, which often included personal details like phone numbers. But with this new option, users can set up a unique, easy-to-remember UPI ID that keeps their identity private while making transactions more convenient.

Why Paytm Introduced the Custom UPI ID Feature

Digital payments have become an integral part of everyday life, and users increasingly prefer personalized, memorable payment handles. Paytm’s latest update addresses this need by giving users full control over their UPI identity.

Previously, most UPI IDs displayed a user’s mobile number followed by the bank domain (for example, 98xxxxxx@paytm). This not only made the ID long and impersonal but also raised privacy concerns, as mobile numbers were visible to merchants or recipients.

With the new update, users can replace their phone number with custom text, numbers, or even a mix of both—making their UPI handle more secure and uniquely theirs.

How to Create Your Own UPI ID on Paytm

Setting up your personalized UPI ID takes just a few minutes. Here’s the step-by-step process:

  1. Open the Paytm app on your smartphone.

  2. Go to your Profile section and tap on ‘UPI & Payment Settings.’

  3. You’ll see all your linked bank accounts and current UPI IDs.

  4. Select ‘Create a New UPI ID.’

  5. Enter your preferred combination of letters and numbers (for example: naveen.jain@paytm).

  6. Confirm and save your new UPI ID.

  7. You can also create a backup UPI ID to ensure smooth transactions if your primary one ever faces a temporary glitch.

Once set up, this ID can be used for sending, receiving, or requesting payments through Paytm, just like your default UPI ID.

Privacy and Security Benefits

One of the biggest advantages of this feature is enhanced privacy. Since your phone number no longer appears in your UPI handle, your personal details remain hidden during transactions. It also adds a layer of protection against phishing and fraud, as hackers cannot easily identify or misuse your UPI-linked number.

In addition, users who manage multiple accounts or businesses can now create separate UPI IDs for different purposes, making payment management more organized and professional.

More Banks and Apps to Join the Trend

Initially, Paytm rolled out this feature exclusively for Yes Bank and Axis Bank account holders. However, the company has now expanded access to customers of HDFC Bank and State Bank of India (SBI) as well.

According to recent reports, Google Pay and PhonePe are also planning to introduce similar customizable UPI ID options in the near future. While Google Pay has not yet made the feature widely available, industry experts expect a full rollout soon, following Paytm’s lead.

Why This Update Matters for Users

Paytm’s new feature isn’t just about personalization—it’s about empowering users. With rising concerns about data privacy and identity theft, having the ability to choose a custom UPI ID gives individuals control, convenience, and confidence in every transaction.

Moreover, easy-to-remember IDs make digital payments simpler—whether you’re paying bills, transferring money, or receiving payments from clients and friends.

This step strengthens Paytm’s position as one of India’s most innovative fintech leaders, continuing its tradition of introducing user-friendly features that enhance digital security and accessibility.
