What is a Passkey?

A Passkey is a login technology that eliminates the need to type a password every time. It allows users to log into their accounts using authentication methods already available on their phones, computers, or other devices—such as fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, or screen locks.
This technology operates based on the FIDO (Fast Identity Online) standard. Unlike traditional passwords, Passkeys do not involve storing secret information on a server. Instead, the device generates a cryptographic key pair: one part remains securely on the device, while the other is shared with the relevant online service.

Why is it more secure than a password?
The biggest advantage of a Passkey is that it cannot be stolen simply by being memorized or typed out. Since logging in requires biometric authentication (like a fingerprint or face scan) or a device lock, it becomes difficult for unauthorized individuals to access the account.

Additionally, Passkeys offer superior protection against phishing attacks. Methods used to trick users into revealing passwords on fake websites do not work here, as the Passkey is cryptographically linked to the specific website or app.

How do you use a Passkey?
If a website or app supports Passkeys, the option can usually be set up within the account's security settings. Once configured, the user can verify their identity using a fingerprint, facial recognition, or screen lock during future logins.

It is too early to say for sure. Many websites and services still rely on passwords. However, major tech companies like Google, Apple, and Microsoft are actively moving towards adopting Passkeys.

As the use of Passkeys grows in the future, the hassle of remembering and frequently changing passwords could be eliminated. At the same time, it may also become more difficult for cybercriminals to steal users' login credentials compared to before.
