Parents will now be kept informed about what their children are asking ChatGPT! OpenAI has taken a major step..
Nowadays, children are also using AI tools like ChatGPT for their studies and to find answers to their questions. However, information obtained from AI can potentially be misused. Keeping this risk in mind, OpenAI has decided to tighten its safety policies for users under the age of 18. ChatGPT will no longer provide children with information regarding weapons or security systems that could be used to cause harm. Even the responses to certain general inquiries will be restricted.
Stricter Rules for ChatGPT
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT already prohibited assisting children in purchasing or acquiring weapons, or in planning acts of violence. The company has now expanded the scope of these restrictions. Under the new guidelines, information concerning the use of weapons or security systems—which could be subject to misuse—will not be provided.
Nevertheless, children may still seek assistance from ChatGPT on how to prevent violence, de-escalate conflicts, or navigate difficult situations. When necessary, the AI may also advise them to speak with a trusted adult.
Chats May Be Terminated for Repeated Inquiries About Violence
If a user consistently engages in discussions related to violence, ChatGPT may terminate the conversation. In the event of repeated occurrences, OpenAI may also temporarily suspend the account.
These rules are not limited to children alone. Users of any age will no longer be provided with highly detailed information regarding weapons or devices used in major historical attacks. Furthermore, information on how to acquire such items will also be restricted.
Informing Parents
OpenAI will assess a user's age by analyzing their behavior and how they interact with ChatGPT. If the system determines that a user is under 18, they will be directed to a version of ChatGPT designed for adolescents.
If a child’s access is restricted due to persistent discussions involving violence, their parents may also be notified. Meanwhile, an individual who has been mistakenly identified as a minor will be able to verify their age using Persona.
According to OpenAI, in the third quarter of 2026, over 200 cases—involving serious concerns related to violence—were referred to law enforcement agencies. The company will gradually roll out new safety features to all users over the coming weeks.
