OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Arrives to Challenge Google and Anthropic—Find Out What Makes It Special..
OpenAI introduced a major update to its GPT-5 series of artificial intelligence (AI) models on Thursday. Regarding the new GPT-5.5, it is reported that these new models offer improved intent understanding, agentic coding, and reasoning capabilities. The San Francisco-based AI giant claims that these models outperform Anthropic's latest Claude Opus 4.7 and Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro models across a wide range of tasks. These Large Language Models (LLMs) are initially being rolled out to the company's paid subscribers and via its Application Programming Interface (API).
OpenAI Introduces GPT-5.5
In a post, the company unveiled the GPT-5.5 series of AI models and provided detailed information about them. It consists of three variants: the Base Model, GPT-5.5 Thinking, and GPT-5.5 Pro. OpenAI is rolling out the GPT-5.5 and Thinking models within ChatGPT for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users; however, the GPT-5.5 Pro model is not available to Plus users.
How Advanced is ChatGPT-5.5?
Within Codex, the GPT-5.5 AI model is available to Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers. This coding platform will offer a context window of 400K tokens and a "Fast Mode." OpenAI stated that these AI models will soon be made available via its Response and Chat Completion APIs. Pricing has been set at $5 (approximately ₹471) per million input tokens and $30 (approximately ₹2,828) per million output tokens.
In terms of improvements, the models focus primarily on agentic coding and intent understanding. OpenAI claims that GPT-5.5 achieved a score of 82.7 percent on the Terminal-Bench 2.0 benchmark, which evaluates command-line workflows. It has outperformed the latest models from both Anthropic and Google. It also scored 73.1 percent on SWE-Bench Pro—the company's internal evaluation benchmark for long-horizon coding tasks.
In terms of real-world performance, the GPT-5.5-powered Codex is said to be capable of handling code implementation, refactoring, debugging, testing, and validation. OpenAI states that the model can identify the root causes behind ambiguous failures, verify assumptions using various tools, and implement necessary changes across an entire codebase.
Another key area is knowledge work. This model is described as being more intuitive than its predecessors and offers enhanced intent understanding. It can better discern exactly what a user requires, locate relevant information, and generate useful output by reviewing and refining its results. Furthermore, it is claimed that these capabilities also enhance the model's proficiency in scientific and technical research. OpenAI noted that GPT-5.5 can gather evidence, test hypotheses, interpret results, and determine appropriate next steps.
