Two Versions of GPT-5.1
This update includes two models, GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. GPT-5.1 provides fast and accurate responses, while also understanding the user's conversation thoroughly. GPT-5.1 Thinking maintains consistency in long or complex conversations and provides thoughtful responses. ChatGPT will automatically determine which model is best for each question. Both versions will be available to all users starting next week. Older GPT-5 models will remain in the 'Legacy Models' section for three months before being removed.
New Customization Features for ChatGPT
OpenAI has added several new preset personality styles to ChatGPT. Users can now choose from eight tones to suit their needs: Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical. This will allow users to customize ChatGPT's speaking style (tone), such as choosing Professional, Friendly, or Funny, to tailor their chat. The company is also testing a new feature that allows users to adjust ChatGPT's communication style in the settings. This feature will gradually be available to all users. OpenAI's Applications CEO, Fiji Simo, explained that now that ChatGPT has over 800 million users, a single tone won't work for everyone, making customization essential.
User Feedback and Competition
The first version of GPT-5 was released in August, but received mixed reviews. Many users said it didn't show much difference from previous models. For this reason, OpenAI later re-released GPT-4o. Meanwhile, OpenAI's partner, Microsoft, is also experimenting with Anthropic's models. Microsoft plans to incorporate these models into several of its AI tools, such as Copilot Researcher, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Studio, and new Office agents for Word and PowerPoint.
The Connection Between ChatGPT Atlas and GPT-5.1
The launch of GPT-5.1 follows OpenAI's recent ChatGPT Atlas. Atlas is an AI-powered web browser that features 'Agent Mode.' This feature is currently available only to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users and allows you to work with AI directly in the web browser.
