OpenAI is continuously making changes to its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. The company has now launched a new version of ChatGPT, GPT-5.1. This is the first major upgrade to the GPT-5 series, providing users with a more natural conversation experience. Many users of the GPT-5 model complained that it spoke like a machine and lacked human expressions. With the 5.1 model, the company has attempted to address this shortcoming.

GPT-5.1 will be available in three models.

The company has introduced three new models: GPT-5.1 Instant, GPT-5.1 Thinking, and GPT-5.1 Auto. OpenAI says that ChatGPT will now speak in a warmer and friendlier manner than before. Initially, this update will be available to ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro, and Business users, while it will later be released to free users as well.

Only select users will be able to take advantage of GPT-5.1.
OpenAI stated in its blog that the GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking models are currently being gradually rolled out to all paid users. These models will also soon be available in the API for developers, where Instant has been added as GPT-5.1-chat-latest and Thinking as GPT-5.1. The company clarified that the old GPT-5 model will only be available for the next three months, while GPT-4o and GPT-4.1 will continue to be available for the time being to provide users with options.

The new model will speak warmly.
The GPT-5.1 Instant model will be the default version for free users. It has been made more conversational and human-like. During testing, users reported that its responses now sound human-like, neither too formal nor too simple. The new model understands user instructions more accurately and can think before responding, a feature called adaptive reasoning, making it more natural than the previous version.
