Only smart meters will be installed for new electricity connections; new rule to take effect in Bihar from November 1..
Electricity connections in Bihar have become more expensive, with new rates set to take effect from November 1st. Obtaining a new electricity connection will now be costlier. The Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) has granted approval for this change. Both the North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited and the South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited have notified the new rates, which will apply to electricity connections with a load of up to 150 kilowatts (kW). Under the new regulations, fixed service charges have been established for both single-phase and three-phase connections.
**Electricity Connection Rates**
For new low-tension (LT) single-phase connections—whether for domestic or other categories—up to 7 kW, the cost will now be higher. A service charge of ₹900 applies to connections up to 3 kW (calculated at a rate of ₹300 per kW). For connections exceeding 3 kW, a base charge of ₹2,700 will be levied, with an additional charge of ₹1,000 for every kilowatt above the 3 kW threshold.
For low-tension three-phase connections, the cost is ₹4,500 for loads up to 5 kW; for loads exceeding 5 kW, an additional charge of ₹1,500 per extra kilowatt applies. For connections up to 20 kW, the cost is ₹21,000, while for loads exceeding 20 kW, an additional charge of ₹2,000 per extra kilowatt will be incurred.
**Impact of Smart Prepaid Meters**
Instead of arbitrary charges, power companies have now set fixed service fees for new connections of up to 150 kW. Consumers opting for a new connection will be provided with a smart prepaid meter. Furthermore, a new tariff structure will be implemented, where electricity is cheaper during the day and more expensive during peak (high-demand) hours. Once the required fees are paid, the power company will provide the service line and connection cables up to the meter point, after which the new connection will be activated. The power distribution companies have issued guidelines regarding these changes to all their zones and blocks. Rs 900 for 3 kW
For LT single-phase connections (up to 7 kW):

(Additionally, Rs 1,000 must be paid for every kW)
