WhatsApp consistently introduces new features for its millions of users. Now, reports suggest that the Meta-owned messaging platform is working on two new features designed to enhance the user experience: a "green dot" online indicator and an advanced backup management feature.

Starting with the green dot feature, it will allow users to see if a contact is online without opening the chat. Currently, one must open a chat to check a person's online status, but with this new feature, a green dot appearing on the profile photo will convey this information.

According to reports, this feature has been spotted in version 2.26.24.5 of WhatsApp Beta for Android. It will function similarly to the online indicators found on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Slack. However, users will have the option to hide their online status via privacy settings if they wish.

New Backup Section
Additionally, WhatsApp is working on a new backup management section. This feature will enable users to view, delete, and—if necessary—create copies of their old backups. This will make it easier to manage storage space on both the phone and Google Drive.

Reports indicate that the new backup management tool might also provide shortcuts for controlling Google Drive storage. Furthermore, it could offer the ability to access WhatsApp backup settings directly from the Android system settings.

Interestingly, Google is also working in this direction. A new update to Google Play Services is expected to give Android users the option to manage WhatsApp backups directly from their device settings.

Although both features are currently in the testing and development stages, they are expected to be rolled out to all users in future updates. If implemented, viewing online status and managing backups on WhatsApp will become significantly easier than before.
