Fake Helpline Number: In today's digital age, solutions to every problem, big or small, are sought over the phone or the internet. Whether it's banking services, mobile recharges, e-commerce refunds, or customer care, people often quickly search for helpline numbers on Google. But cybercriminals are exploiting this habit on a large scale. A single wrong call can empty people's bank accounts and lead to fraud worth crores of rupees.

How does this fake helpline game work?

Cybercriminals post fake helpline numbers on Google search or social media platforms. When someone calls these numbers seeking a solution to their problem, the person who answers the phone identifies themselves as a customer care executive.

Then, under the pretext of understanding the customer's problem, they ask for OTP, debit/credit card details, UPI PIN, or bank account information. In some cases, they even ask to install a screen-sharing app. Once the victim falls for this trick, their account is emptied within minutes.

New Tricks of Fraudsters

These fraudsters have become even more clever. They often run paid ads and display their fake helpline numbers at the top of Google search results. Unsuspecting people call these numbers, thinking they are real.

Furthermore, fraudsters also send fake customer care links via email or SMS. Upon clicking the link, malware is installed on the mobile phone, and all important data is transferred to the fraudsters.

Which services are being targeted the most?

Banks and UPI services

Online shopping platforms (Amazon, Flipkart)

Mobile and DTH recharge companies

Travel booking websites

E-wallets and payment apps

Every day, thousands of people fall prey to fake helplines under the guise of these services.

Ways to Avoid This

Find helpline numbers only on official websites/apps.

Never share your OTP, UPI PIN, or card details with anyone.

Only install screen-sharing apps from trusted sources, and only if absolutely necessary.

Avoid clicking on unknown links or emails.

If in doubt, immediately contact your bank or cyber helpline number 1930.

Government and Corporate Initiatives

The Indian Cyber Cell is continuously working to block such fake helpline numbers. Additionally, banks and e-commerce companies have started sending notifications and email alerts to alert customers. Whether it's the festive season or a normal day, cyber criminals are ready to take advantage of every opportunity. In such a situation, even a small negligence can prove costly.
