NPCI: UPI will be possible without phone and PIN, which payment facility has NPCI brought?

Digital payments, or rather, transactions, are changing daily in the country. The government and its institutions are introducing new features to benefit ordinary users and ensure secure payments and transactions. Now, in India, payments can be made using the UPI Lite feature through wearable smartglasses. Users simply need to scan a QR code and issue a voice command. The special thing is that this doesn't require a mobile phone, nor is any PIN required. Let's explain the specifics of the feature announced by the government.
No Mobile or PIN Required
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) stated that payments can be made using the UPI Lite feature through wearable smartglasses. According to the organization, this feature requires neither a mobile phone nor a PIN. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor T. Rabi Sankar announced the launch of this new digital payment facility at the Global Fintech Fest 2025. UPI Lite has been developed specifically for small-value, recurring payments with minimal reliance on the mainstream banking system.
Video Released
NPCI released a video explaining that making payments with UPI Lite on smart glasses is as seamless as "look, speak, and pay." This feature is targeted for everyday payments such as retail, food, and transportation, and makes digital payments more convenient and seamless. NPCI stated that this initiative is the first extension of UPI to the wearable environment and is considered an important step towards "seamless, ambient payments."
Reducing pressure on the core banking system
This will also benefit banks and payment service providers as non-CBS wallet transactions will reduce pressure on the core banking system. NPCI said that enabling UPI Lite payments through wearable smartglasses will be a significant step towards positioning India as a leader in global digital payment innovation. NPCI, which operates retail payment and settlement systems in the country, also owns UPI.
