AI in Netflix Content Recommendation: Netflix has officially announced that it is preparing to launch a vertical video feed—similar to those found on TikTok and YouTube Shorts—on its platform. This new feature is set to become available on the app starting this very month. The company's objective behind this move is to assist users in discovering new content.

How Will It Work?
Users will be able to watch "Reels" on Netflix in much the same way they do on Instagram. Netflix will display short clips from its various shows and movies. Additionally, these clips will come equipped with several other features, such as:

Instant Switch: If you come across a clip you like, you can start watching the full movie or show immediately with just a single tap.

Sharing and Lists: You can add these clips to your "My List" or share them directly with friends.

When Will the New Feature Launch?
Netflix confirmed during its Q1 2026 earnings call that this new feature is expected to roll out on the app sometime this month. Testing for the feature is already underway.

Why Is This Change Happening?
In today's landscape, people's content consumption habits are evolving rapidly. Users are increasingly gravitating toward short, quick-to-consume videos rather than longer-form content. The popularity of platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube Shorts—where users continuously discover new content simply by scrolling—is on a steady rise.

In light of this trend, Netflix is also making this strategic shift. The company aims to encourage users to spend more time on its platform and to make it easier for them to discover content that aligns with their preferences. Through this vertical video feed, Netflix seeks to simplify the content discovery process, enabling users to access interesting shows and movies directly without the need for extensive searching.

Gregory Peters Reveals the Strategy
Netflix Co-CEO Gregory Peters notes that while the company has been working on personalization for the past two decades, new AI technologies are now poised to take this capability to an entirely new level. Moving forward, AI will play the pivotal role of recommending content to users by intelligently analyzing and understanding their individual tastes.

According to various reports, the start of 2026 has proven to be a stellar period for Netflix. The company recorded a revenue of $12.25 billion (approximately ₹1 lakh crore) in Q1 2026, representing a 16.2% increase compared to the previous year. Alongside this, the company generated a substantial profit of $5.28 billion.

However, this profitability has come at a cost to customers' wallets. Just last month, Netflix raised its prices. The cheapest plan has now increased from $7.99 to $8.99 (approximately ₹750) per month.
