WhatsApp launched its new Bill Payments feature in India on Thursday. With this feature, users can discover, manage, and pay household utility bills directly within WhatsApp without leaving the app. For these transactions, Meta's platform utilizes the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network. Users will have access to over 22,722 billers across more than 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards, and loan installments. The feature is being rolled out gradually and will become available to Android and iOS users across India over the next few weeks.

According to WhatsApp, the introduction of the bill payments service significantly expands the app's in-app payment capabilities beyond mobile recharges and other standard transactions. Users can access bill payments by tapping the '₹' (Rupee) icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. From there, they can select the bill category and biller, enter account details to confirm, and review the fetched bill amount on the screen before making the payment.

Another notable feature is the 'Household Bills Summary.' This automatically fetches and displays past bills, while billers previously paid via WhatsApp appear on the home screen for one-tap access. WhatsApp states that users can manage multiple accounts for a single biller, making it easy to settle bills for home, office, or family members from one central location.

The app automatically displays popular bill categories at the top of the payments home screen. Additionally, a 'See All' option allows users to view the complete list, which includes over 20 categories. The company states that this feature has been introduced so that users do not have to repeatedly switch between different apps to pay their bills.

This new feature is powered by Bharat Connect (BBPS) and supports 22,722 billers across 30 categories. It is currently being rolled out, and all Android and iOS users will be able to avail themselves of it in the coming weeks.
