Nothing OS 5.0 was introduced on Tuesday as the latest user interface (UI) for the UK-based tech firm's smartphones. This new UI is based on the latest Android 17 version, which was launched earlier this year. The smartphone maker states that Nothing OS 5.0 brings over 80 updates to the handsets, including design changes, new personalization options, performance enhancements, and AI tools. The Carl Pei-led tech firm has also announced the Nothing OS 5.0 open beta program. The beta version of this software will first be rolled out for the London-based company's flagship handset, the Nothing Phone (3).

Nothing OS 5.0 Availability and Rollout Schedule
In a press release, the Carl Pei-led tech firm announced the launch of Nothing OS 5.0. It has been introduced as the company's latest software version for handsets, built on Android 17. Nothing stated that the Nothing OS 5.0 open beta version will begin rolling out on August 26 (Wednesday) at 3:30 PM IST. The Nothing Phone (3) will be the company's first smartphone to receive the beta version of this latest software, while the stable release is planned for mid-October.

Following the Nothing Phone (3), the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro will receive the Nothing OS 5.0 beta version in early September. Subsequently, the Phone (4a), Phone (3a) Pro, and Phone (3a) will receive this update in late September. These four models will get the stable Nothing OS 5.0 update in early November. Meanwhile, the Nothing Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus will receive the beta update in mid-October, with plans to roll out the stable version in mid-November.

The Nothing Phone (4b) will also receive the Nothing OS 5.0 beta version in mid-December and the stable version in mid-January. Finally, the Nothing Phone (3a) Lite will receive the stable Nothing OS 5.0 update in late December, while the CMF Phone 2 Pro will get it in mid-January. The CMF Phone 2 Pro is the only handset from the company's sub-brand to make it onto the list of eligible devices.

Nothing OS 5.0 Design Changes and Performance Upgrades
Nothing OS 5.0 will upgrade eligible smartphones to Android 17. It introduces redesigned icons for apps, settings, the camera, the gallery, and the status bar. Widgets and the search bar have been redesigned with transparent elements, which are said to add 'depth and layering' to the screen. Nothing OS 5.0 also updates the gallery with similar transparent details. It features a new adaptive color system capable of picking shades from the home screen wallpaper to apply tints to app icons and widgets.

Additionally, the Nothing OS 5.0 update introduces the 'Geist' typeface and revises system text sizes. Two new lock screen clock faces—'Gooey' and 'Micrographics'—have also been added to the OS. Users can now select and move multiple apps and widgets simultaneously on the home screen. Furthermore, two new widgets named 'Collector' and 'Away Time' have been included.

Nothing OS 5.0 introduces a dedicated app for the Glyph Interface and a Glyph Timer widget. The tech firm claims that this Android 17-based update improves touch response and background app retention through better system resource management. The OS will also feature other system-level refinements and fresh system animations. Finally, the Nothing OS 5.0 update makes the 'Essential Voice' tool faster than before and improves its performance to deliver better transcriptions. 'Essential Space' also includes the 'Smart Collections' feature, which is capable of organizing and recommending content for both new and existing collections. Meanwhile, the 'Essential Apps Builder' will now be available as a standalone app with the Nothing OS 5.0 update.
