No Need for Google Drive for WhatsApp Chat Backups: Company Working on a New Feature
WhatsApp may soon introduce a major change to its backup system, thereby reducing the need for Google Drive or iCloud. User data will be stored securely directly within WhatsApp's own cloud service. Notably, this backup will be fully encrypted.
We all know that WhatsApp backups often consume a significant amount of space on Google Drive and iCloud. The trouble begins when you have to share this same storage allocation with your photos, videos, files, and data from other applications. Gradually, the available free space runs out, leaving you with no choice but to pay for additional storage.
However, there is now good news for WhatsApp users. Meta's instant messaging app is gearing up for a major overhaul that could reduce its reliance on third-party cloud storage services. According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp may soon launch its own proprietary backup system. Under this system, your chat backups will be saved directly to WhatsApp's own cloud. Most importantly, this entire process will be secured with end-to-end encryption—meaning your chats will remain completely safe, just as they are now.
WhatsApp Introducing New Cloud Storage
Currently, Android users save their WhatsApp backups to Google Drive, while iPhone users utilize iCloud. The issue arises because this storage space is shared with photos, files, and data from other apps. Consequently, as your data accumulates, the storage space fills up rapidly. You are then left with two options: either delete old data to free up space or pay for additional storage capacity.
According to upcoming updates, Meta is rolling out a new feature for WhatsApp that will provide users with dedicated cloud storage specifically for the app. This means that, if you choose to do so, you will be able to store your backups on WhatsApp's own cloud service instead of relying on Google Drive. Furthermore, this service is expected to offer up to 2GB of free storage space. End-to-End Encryption Guaranteed for Cloud Backups
If users choose to save their WhatsApp backups on WhatsApp's servers, encryption will be mandatory. This means your data will remain completely secure, and no one will be able to read it easily.
WhatsApp will also provide you with options regarding the type of encryption you wish to use. By default, the company will recommend the passkey-based method. With this approach, you will not need to remember a lengthy or complex password. However, if you prefer not to use a passkey, you will have an alternative option available. You can choose to secure your backup by setting a password or by utilizing a unique 64-digit encryption key.
