No more fear of data leaks! India launches 3 new AI models that work even without the internet..
While countries like the United States and China have dominated the race for Artificial Intelligence (AI) so far, India is also making rapid progress in this field. As part of this momentum, three new AI models—developed domestically with the support of the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the 'IndiaAI Mission'—have been launched. These models are named EKA-1, Dhir 2B, and Dhir 5B. A key feature is that two of these models can function on smartphones and laptops even without an internet connection. This eliminates the need for users to rely on the internet for every task and also helps in safeguarding personal data. These models have been designed with Indian languages in mind, ensuring they are accessible to people across different regions of the country.
What makes EKA-1 special?
EKA-1 was developed by the Bengaluru-based startup Soket Labs. It is the largest and most powerful of the three models. It is specifically designed to handle complex mathematical problems, software coding, and logical tasks. It is capable of processing and responding to multiple types of tasks simultaneously.
This model consists of 26.3 billion parameters and has been trained on a dataset of 7.5 trillion tokens. In addition to English, it supports all 22 of India’s scheduled languages. It can be utilized in sectors such as banking, financial services, and cybersecurity.
Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B: Functioning without the internet
Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B were developed by ZenteiQ AiTech Innovations. Compared to EKA-1, these are smaller models focused on simplifying everyday tasks. Both are open-source models and can understand English as well as 10 Indian languages.
They can assist users in locating specific information within documents, extracting key insights, and completing various routine tasks. A key feature is that these can be downloaded onto smartphones and laptops and used even without an internet connection.
What are the benefits of using offline AI?
Typically, using AI tools requires an internet connection. However, these models operate directly on your device. Consequently, there is no need to repeatedly send your personal information to an external server for processing, which helps enhance data security. These models could also prove valuable in sectors such as defense, government departments, and education.
How did the government provide support?
Developing and training AI models requires significant financial investment and computing power. Under the 'IndiaAI Mission,' the government provided these startups with access to computing resources at a lower cost and offered financial assistance for research. It is through this collaboration that the development of these indigenous AI models was made possible.
