Last Thursday, Google announced new capabilities for its Gemini app. The Mountain View-based tech giant has introduced tools that allow users to create, preview, and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, and other files directly within a chat. According to the company, users can make changes to generated files, highlight specific sections to ask questions, and request edits to text or visuals—all without leaving the ongoing conversation. Additionally, Google is expanding access to free textbooks within Gemini Notebook.

Gemini can now create and edit documents and PDFs directly within a chat.
In a blog post, Google explained that this update makes it much easier to work on documents and study materials without the need to constantly switch between different apps. Users can ask Gemini to generate a file, open it in a full-screen view, and edit it by typing directly into it. They can also highlight specific text to ask questions about it or request changes to the selected portion. Gemini can enhance both text and visuals within supported file types.

The company is rolling out PDF previewing and editing features for both the web and mobile versions of the Gemini app. However, support for other formats—such as Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files, and code—is currently limited to the web version.

Google also demonstrated how this feature can be used for academic purposes. The company noted that users can upload their handwritten lecture notes and ask Gemini to convert them into a PDF study guide. Following this, users can manually edit the generated documents, highlight specific sections to pose follow-up questions, or instruct the AI assistant to modify particular text or visual elements.

These new file creation and editing features are available to all users in every language supported by the Gemini app.

Additionally, Google announced an expansion of its 'Expert Intelligence' initiative, which was launched last month. This feature enables users to connect directly with credible sources through AI-powered products. According to Google, this latest update makes hundreds of books from publishers in the United States and India available in Gemini Notebook at no cost.
