Imagine if a person could operate a computer simply by thinking, without needing to use their hands—or if someone who is blind could regain the ability to see. This is now becoming a possibility. Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, is working on exactly this. The company has announced two new products: "Blindsight" and "Telepathy." One is designed to help blind individuals see, while the other is being developed to enable users to operate computers and communicate through thought alone.

What is Blindsight, and how does it work?
Blindsight is an experimental brain implant from Neuralink. It is designed to assist individuals who have lost their sight due to damage to their eyes or optic nerves. The unique aspect of this technology is that it bypasses the conventional visual pathway—the eyes—to deliver visual information directly to the brain.

To understand this more easily, it helps to first look at how our eyes normally function. When we see something, our eyes capture light and convert it into signals. These signals travel to the brain via the optic nerve, where the brain interprets them to form an image. However, if the eyes or optic nerves are damaged, this process is disrupted, which can lead to a loss of vision.

To address this, Neuralink plans to use a combination of cameras and a brain implant. Visual information—captured as images—will be transmitted wirelessly to the implant located in the brain. The implant will then stimulate the specific region of the brain responsible for vision. In this way, the system bypasses the standard visual pathway (the eyes and optic nerves) to deliver visual data directly to the brain.

It could also be helpful for those blind from birth.
Furthermore, the company claims that this technology could assist individuals who have lost their sight due to damage to their eyes or optic nerves. It is even suggested that it could potentially help those who have been blind since birth.

However, this requires the part of the brain associated with the visual process to be functional. To date, Neuralink has not provided any demonstration of this technology restoring vision in humans; therefore, it should currently be viewed as an experimental technology.

In September 2024, the company’s concept—referred to as "Blindsight"—was granted "Breakthrough Device" designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). This designation is intended to accelerate the development and review process for technologies that could be useful in treating serious diseases or medical conditions.

Nevertheless, receiving "Breakthrough Device" designation does not mean the technology has been approved for general public use; it must still undergo the formal regulatory approval process. Musk has stated that Blindsight is technically ready from an engineering perspective and is now awaiting regulatory approval.
