Netflix: Netflix quietly removed the Cast feature, frustrating mobile users as videos won't play on TVs..
Netflix has quietly removed the ability to cast to smart TVs and streaming devices from its mobile app. Many users are now unable to see the Cast icon in the app. The company hasn't made an official announcement regarding this feature rollback, but it has highlighted the change on its support page. Importantly, this change applies to new Chromecast and Google TV Streamer users.
Netflix Removes Cast Support from Mobile
Netflix's casting feature allowed users to watch content directly from their mobile devices without installing the app on their TV. This was especially useful for those with limited storage on their smart TVs or who prefer to navigate from their mobile devices. However, Netflix's new support page update clearly states that mobile casting support has been discontinued for most TVs and TV-streaming devices. This change began appearing recently and was first noticed by Android Authority.
Who will get Cast support and who won't?
According to the company, only older Chromecast devices or TVs with Google Cast built in will still be able to use the casting feature. However, mobile casting will no longer work on newer Chromecast models and the Google TV Streamer. The Cast icon has now disappeared from the Netflix app. Although some users are still seeing the icon, it is believed to be removed for everyone soon.
User Complaints and Netflix's Response
Two weeks ago, a user named u/DavidinCincinnati first reported on Reddit that the Cast icon had disappeared from their Netflix app. Several other users subsequently shared similar complaints. Another user, u/freetherabbit, reported that Netflix customer support stated that casting would not be allowed if the device had its own remote. Casting was previously unavailable on ad-supported Netflix plans, and now other users will also be affected by this change.
