Mini Hypersonic Missile: 6 times faster than sound! Will all defense systems fail in the face of China's 'mini missile'?
Modern warfare is no longer limited to tanks and fighter jets. With the pace of technology, the nature of weapons is also rapidly changing. In this context, Chinese scientists are working on a weapon that may seem insignificant, but its impact could transform the entire strategy of aerial warfare. Chinese engineers have developed a weapon that is extremely small, yet capable of destroying enemy aircraft at hypersonic speeds. This unique feature of this weapon has baffled military experts worldwide. Initial information indicates that this technology could pose a significant challenge to existing air defense systems.
What is this new hypersonic missile technology?
According to the South China Morning Post, Chinese scientists and engineers are developing ultra-mini hypersonic glide missiles. The most significant feature of these missiles is that they do not require a traditional large launcher. They can be fired from a single 80mm anti-aircraft gun, which is typically used for artillery fire. After being fired, this missile can reach speeds of Mach 6, approximately six times the speed of sound. This high speed makes it considered more effective than conventional anti-aircraft shells.
Where and Who Can This Missile Target?
According to reports, this missile can target fighter jets or drones flying at an altitude of approximately 32,800 feet from a distance of more than 20 kilometers. This means that this weapon can prove effective even within the range considered safe by enemy aerial platforms.
The enemy has no chance to react.
The missile's speed and small size make it even more dangerous. An enemy aircraft cannot see the missile until it reaches a distance of just 3 kilometers. In this situation, the pilot has only a few seconds to react. Even at such a short range, the missile's speed remains approximately Mach 3.6, greatly reducing the likelihood of any countermeasures or defense systems being effective.
Claim of 99% Lethality
Based on computer simulations, it has been claimed that even if the target suddenly makes a sharp turn of approximately 90 degrees, this hypersonic missile can change its direction and hit the target. For this reason, its kill probability, i.e., the probability of destroying the target, is estimated to be approximately 99%. This combination of speed and accuracy makes it a highly effective weapon for modern warfare.
How can this small missile change the rules of war?
Experts believe that this technology could significantly transform military strategy. A typical anti-aircraft gun can fire one round every second. If these hypersonic systems are installed in these guns to replace traditional medium- and short-range air defense missiles, the entire equation of air warfare could change. The relatively low cost and widespread availability of these missiles also make them an attractive option for future conflicts.
Why has global concern increased?
It is not yet clear when, how, and at what scale these missiles will be deployed. But it's certain that if this technology becomes widely used, existing air defense systems will need to be rethought. This is why China's initiative is no longer just a technological experiment, but a topic of global security debate.
