Meta has unveiled its new VR glasses for the virtual reality world. While they look like ordinary glasses, they will function much like a compact computer. The company plans to launch them in the spring of 2027 with a price tag of $1,299.99 (approximately ₹1.1 lakh). A standout feature is their weight—around 100 grams—meaning there is no need to strap a heavy device onto your head; simply put on the glasses, and a large screen appears before your eyes.
Until now, VR meant bulky headsets, thick straps, and weight on the head. Meta has sought to significantly reduce this inconvenience. The glasses will house sensors and screens, while the processor, battery, and storage will be contained in a small "puck." This puck can be clipped to a pocket or bag and connected to the glasses via a thin cable. According to Meta, these VR glasses weigh about one-fifth as much as the Meta Quest 3.
The Meta VR glasses feature a "5K Infinite Display" built on Micro-OLED technology, promising exceptionally clear imagery. Specialized lenses should make even small text easy to read. They also support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, delivering vibrant colors and immersive, surround-sound audio. Collaborations with Disney will bring 3D movies to the device, allowing you to carry a personal cinema with you—even while sitting on a plane.
A common concern with VR headsets is losing awareness of one's surroundings. Meta addresses this by using passthrough cameras and an open-sided design, ensuring the wearer remains aware of their environment. You can watch a movie while still being able to see your mobile phone, a table, or other nearby objects. The device is also suitable for work; it can connect to Mac or Windows PCs, allowing multiple large virtual screens to be displayed simultaneously. These glasses feature Meta's AI integrated directly into the system, eliminating the need to press buttons or pick up a controller for every task. You can play movies, open apps, or perform searches using voice commands. Various actions can also be controlled through eye movements and hand gestures. At launch, over 75 games playable via hand gestures will be available, alongside support for existing Meta Quest titles.
For sports enthusiasts, Meta is incorporating sports content, including apps like NBA, MLB, and ESPN. The company promises an "Immersive Sports" experience featuring 180-degree views and 8K streaming. Plans are in place to offer more than 100 immersive live sports events annually following the launch. In terms of gaming, hundreds of titles will be streamable via Xbox Cloud Gaming, and users can connect Bluetooth gamepads to play on a large virtual screen.
Perhaps the most intriguing feature of these Meta VR glasses is the hologram capability. The company is introducing technology that displays a digital representation of you to the person on the other end of a video call, capturing facial expressions and reactions. This feature will be compatible with apps like WhatsApp and Zoom, allowing distant family and friends to feel as though you are right there with them. The glasses are claimed to offer a battery life of approximately three hours and support 45W fast charging. Priced at $1,299.99, the product is scheduled to launch in the spring of 2027.
