Meta’s Warning Regarding Malicious WhatsApp: Meta’s security team has uncovered a social engineering attack in Italy in which users were lured into downloading a modified (fake) version of WhatsApp. An Italian surveillance firm, SIO, and several of its associates are alleged to be behind this fraudulent app. This malware is so potent that it can remotely activate a user's phone microphone and camera. Meta is now preparing to take legal action against this spyware company.

WhatsApp Security Alert 2026: How Was the Fake App Trap Laid?

1. Social Engineering and Fraudulent Downloads
Instead of targeting users directly, the attackers resorted to social engineering. This involved convincing users that they were downloading a superior or exclusive version of WhatsApp. This app was not available on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store; rather, it was distributed via third-party links. The moment users installed it, the attackers gained complete access to their phones.

2. The Threat of ASIGINT and Spyrtacus Spyware
A company named ASIGINT—which develops intelligence software for governments—has been implicated in this scheme. According to reports, the fake app concealed a piece of spyware known as Spartacus. This spyware is capable of intercepting phone calls, surreptitiously activating the microphone, and accessing photos and videos stored in the device's gallery. Last year, this same spyware targeted numerous Android devices, operating as a fake customer support tool to steal data.

3. Meta’s Decisive Action
Meta has identified the 200 affected users and has logged them out of their accounts to ensure their immediate security. WhatsApp spokesperson Margarita Franklin has explicitly stated that the company's top priority is safeguarding the privacy of the users who were deceived. The company has decided to issue a legal notice to the spyware firm in an effort to curb the activities of such malicious clients in the future.

How to Identify a Fake WhatsApp App: How to Stay Safe?
Choose Official Stores Only: Never download WhatsApp or any other app via APK links or from unknown websites. Always use the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

Check Permissions: Be cautious if a standard app requests unnecessary permissions, such as access to your camera or microphone.

Avoid Unknown Links: Do not click on links accompanied by enticing messages—such as those promising a new "Gold Version" of WhatsApp or versions with "extra features."
