Make sure to do these 3 things before turning off your AC for the winter; otherwise, you could face major problems next summer..
As soon as winter arrives, most people simply switch off their AC and forget about it. However, failing to pack it properly can lead to issues when summer returns. Problems such as unpleasant odors, reduced cooling efficiency, high power consumption, or sudden breakdowns are common. Therefore, make sure to complete these three essential tasks before shutting down and packing away your AC for the season.
**Thoroughly clean the filters and coils**
Dust, dirt, and bacteria accumulate on the AC filters and coils throughout the summer. If left uncleaned, the winter humidity can cause fungal growth and unpleasant odors.
When you turn the AC on next summer, it might blow out stale air and provide less cooling. Start by unplugging the AC. Remove the filters from the indoor unit and wash them with mild soapy water. Dry them thoroughly in the sun before reinstalling them.
Clean the dust accumulated on the coils using a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner. Also, clear away leaves, dust, and debris from the outdoor unit. This extends the AC's lifespan and ensures better performance when you use it again.
**Run in 'Dry Mode' to eliminate moisture and water**
Water accumulation inside the AC is a major issue. Moisture leads to rust, bacterial growth, and foul odors. Therefore, run the AC in 'Dry Mode' for 2–3 hours before shutting it down; this will dry out any internal moisture. Drain any remaining water from the drain pipe and drip tray, and clear the pipe if it is blocked. Turn off the AC only after all the water has been drained. This simple step helps prevent odors and malfunctions next summer.
**Cut the power, cover the unit, and remove remote batteries**
After cleaning, turn off the main switch or MCB and unplug the AC to eliminate the risk of voltage fluctuations or short circuits. Cover the outdoor unit with a breathable fabric or a specialized AC cover. Do not use plastic, as it traps moisture. Also, remove the batteries from the remote.
Leaving batteries inside for an extended period can lead to leakage and damage the remote. These three steps do not take much time, yet they ensure the AC is as good as new for the next summer.
Proper care saves on servicing costs and ensures the AC runs smoothly for a long time. So, do not be negligent when switching off the AC this time. A little effort now will allow you to enjoy cool comfort without any worry next summer.
